Day 1 : Arrival in Rio de Janeiro

On arrival in Rio de Janeiro, you will be met by a Travel The Unknown representative and transferred to your hotel.

Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in Brazil by population, and the sixth-largest by this measure in the Americas. The city was given its name by Portuguese navigators in 1501, founded in 1565, and became the capital of the colony in 1763. Surrounded by lush forest and renowned for its cultural diversity, a section of the city has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO under the Cultural Landscape category.

Day 2 : Rio de Janeiro

Spend the day touring the city of Rio de Janeiro. Key sights will include the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Aterro do Flamengo park. Continue to the neighbourhood of Urca, where you will take a cable-car up to Morro da Urca and onwards to Sugar Loaf Mountain to enjoy spectacular views over the city. Then, visit the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer, before stopping at Mário Filho Stadium, better known as the Maracanã, and the nearby Sambódromo.

Metropolitan Cathedral is a church located in the centre of Rio de Janeiro. Modelled by Edgar Fonseca in a modern style influenced by Mayan pyramid architecture, the cathedral is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint Sebastian. Built between 1964 and 1997, the building stands at a height of 75 metres and can contain roughly 25,000 people.

Aterro do Flamengo is the largest public park in Rio de Janeiro, encompassing roughly 296 acres (120 hectares). Completed in 1965, it was designed by Lota de Macedo Soares and contains several recreational areas.

Sugarloaf Mountain is a 395-metre conical peak overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro. The peak received its name from its shape, said to resemble a loaf of refined sugar, and is a widely recognized landmark for the city. The mountain, along with the Urca Hill site, forms a protected monument designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Christ the Redeemer is a large Art-Deco style statue of Jesus Christ situated atop the summit of Mount Corcovado. Commissioned by the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro in 1921, it was completed ten years later. The statue stands at 30 metres tall, with a wingspan of 28 metres where its arms are outstretched. It is the largest statue of its style in the world.

Mario Filho Stadium, also known as the Maracanã, is a football stadium located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Opened in 1950 as the largest stadium by capacity in the world, the Maracanã was built to host the FIFA World Cup. Named after journalist Mário Filho, the stadium receives its popular name from the Maracanã River that runs nearby. Aside from football, the stadium has also hosted other sports and music events since its completion.

The Sambódromo is a parade area built in the city of Rio de Janeiro for the Rio Carnival celebrations and ensuing samba school competitions that form part of the parade. Commissioned in 1983, it was designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer. It has a capacity of 90,000 and consists of 700 metres of road with grandstands placed on either side of the street.

Day 3 : Rio de Janeiro

Take a walking tour of Rio's Santa Teresa neighbourhood, where you will learn about the Morrinho Project from one of the initiative's founders, a member of the Pereira da Silva community. During the tour, enjoy various stunning views of Guanabara Bay and Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Santa Teresa is a neighbourhood in the city of Rio de Janeiro, known for its winding cobblestone streets, bohemian atmosphere and bright yellow trams. The neighbourhood takes its name from the Carmelite Convent of Saint Teresa, founded in the area in the 1750s, but only gained its bohemian reputation in the 1960s and '70s, when an influx of artists transformed the area.

Morrinho Project is a sociocultural project located in the Laranjeiras neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, replicating a typical favela, a low-income neighbourhood, as would be found in the area. The project was started in 1998 by a group of young people living in the neighbourhood as a pastime to recreate their daily lives, and has grown to international renown. At only 450 metres squared, the project, whose name translates to “Little Hill”, is formed entirely out of bricks, and is populated by toy automobiles and LEGO figurines.
 

Guanabara Bay is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean in southeastern Brazil, on whose southwest shore the city of Rio de Janeiro is located. At 31 kilometres in length, the bay’s entrance measures 1.6 kilometres. It was discovered in 1502, and originally named after Rio de Janeiro.

Day 4 : Rio de Janeiro - Manaus

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Manaus. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. Then, embark on a city tour of Manaus, visiting the renowned Teatro Amazonas opera house, the bustling Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market and the historic city centre.

Often referred to as the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon, Manaus is the capital city of the Amazonas region in northern Brazil, located on the banks of the Negro River. In 1699, the first settlement was built in this area by Captain Francisco da Motta Falcão. It is the largest city in the state, and is enveloped by large swathes of rainforest.

Manaus' Teatro Amazonas, in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, is a beautiful opera house built in 1884 as an attempt to emulate the lavish theatres of Europe. This grand architectural treasure combined roofing from Alsace, furniture from Paris, marble from Italy and steel from England, as well as 198 chandeliers and a dome covered with 36,000 decorated ceramic tiles painted in the colours of the Brazillian flag, to provide a Reinaissance-inspired historical and cultural landmark. Today, Teatro Amazonas is the venue for the Amazonas Philharmonic, the annual Amazonas Opera Festival and the Amazonas Film Festival. It has endured a troubled history as a result of Manaus' previous poverty, but has now been resurrected to fulfill its duties of gracing Brazilians and international visitors with unforgettable performances.

Day 5 : Manaus - Amazon Rainforest

You have an early start today, as you embark on your Amazon adventure! The journey to your remote lodge takes approximately three hours by speed boat and mini-van. En route, you will stop to observe the magnificent Meeting of the Waters. On arrival at the lodge, you will be greeted with a welcome drink and exotic fruits, then lunch, comprising regional and international dishes. In the afternoon, you will embark on a canoe trip of the igarapés (Amazonian creeks) and igapós (flooded forest). You may swim in the Amazon River during this excursion, and may be lucky enough to spot the pink river dolphins who reside here. Return to the lodge for dinner then take a guided evening walk to observe frogs, birds and caymans.

A rare and fascinating phenomenon, the Meeting of the Waters in the Amazon Rainforest refers to the point at which the dark Negro River meets the muddy brown Solimões River, however due to their distinct temperatures, speeds and water densities, the rivers do not mix. This creates a situation in which rivers of different colours flow parallel to each other, with a clearly defined line showing their separation.

The world's largest tropical rainforest, containing thousands of rivers and a large fraction of the world's wildlife species, the Amazon Rainforest covers much of South America, including 40% of Brazil's total area, and large parts of Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Bolivia. Its most notable river is the powerful Amazon River, regarded as the largest drainage system in the world based on volume of flow and area of basin. With high rainfall, humidity, and temperatures, the rainforest is home to a rich array of flora and fauna, many still unrecorded by science. This includes jaguar, manatee, tapir, various rodents and monkeys, as well as myrtle and rosewood trees. Since the rainforest is particularly sensitive to destruction, including human enroachment, exploitation and deforestation, there have recently been increased efforts by governments and international bodies to protect this highly valuable region.

Day 6 : Amazon Rainforest

Early in the morning, depart for a sunrise excursion to witness the transformation of the sky and listen to the sounds of the waking birds (guides will have binoculars for you to use). Enjoy a breakfast with typical fruits and regional food. Depart for a jungle hike, during which your expert guide will introduce you to the wildlife of the Amazon, pointing out plants and describing their uses, as many are edible or medicinal. Return to the lodge for lunch. Later in the afternoon, board a motorboat to fish and learn more about the infamous piranha, as well as other Amazonian fish native to the river. Return to the lodge while enjoying the sunset from the boat. Dinner will be provided from the fish you caught earlier in the afternoon. Following dinner, a guide will offer an informal lecture regarding everyday life in the Amazon, and the legends, traditions and culture of the region.

Day 7 : Amazon Rainforest

After breakfast, depart the lodge for a hike, followed by a stop in a scenic area of the forest for lunch (regional cuisine baked over a fire) and subsequently rest in hammocks, as the natives do. In the afternoon, visit a local native house and learn from the inhabitants about their fascinating culture. A native will share his knowledge of the traditional medicinal plants and demonstrate how to prepare manioc flour, one of the region's main economic resources. Return to the lodge and enjoy your final dinner in the Amazon.

Day 8 : Amazon Rainforest - Foz do Iguaçu

After an early breakfast, transfer to Manaus Airport for connecting flights to Foz do Iguaçu. En route to the airport, stop at the Pirarucu Floating Dock to see the giant pirarucu fish (also known as arapaima), which reach up to 3 metres long and 200 kg. You will have a chance to feed the fish and observe their impressive strength. On arrival at Foz do Iguaçu Airport, you will be met by a local guide and transferred to your hotel.

Day 9 : Iguaçu Falls - Brazilian side

Today, you will explore the astonishing Iguaçu Falls from the Brazilian side. Travel by foot to a panoramic viewpoint of the falls - those who aren't afraid to get a little wet can take a walkway over the river for the best views of the Devil's Throat! Then, take a glass elevator up the cliff face for a view over the upper falls.

Straddling the border between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the phenomenal Iguaçu Falls (Iguazú in Spanish) are a sight to behold. Forming the largest waterfall horseshoe in the world, the falls are set within dense Atlantic forest and are one of South America’s most impressive attractions.

Devil's Throat is one of 275 waterfalls found at Iguazú Falls, and is the tallest of the falls. The drop measures 80 metres, and contains 14 separate systems within it.

Day 10 : Iguaçu Falls - Argentinian side and Guaraní-Mbyá community visit

Today, you will experience Iguaçu Falls from the Argentinian side, taking both the upper and lower trails through the Iguaçu National Park to gain different perspectives of these phenomenal waterfalls.

Later, step off the beaten track for an evening of indigenous culture and memorable experiences as you meet the welcoming Guaraní-Mbyá community. The visit begins with a lively ceremony packed with dancing, typical food and a tobacco ritual, introducing you to the community's vibrant way of life. As the evening bonfire is lit, take a seat alongside the locals and feast together on thoughtfully prepared dishes, washed down with refreshing Guaranian drinks. 

Please note: The evening experience may alter slightly depending on the season and the wishes of the tribe.

Guarani-Mbya community is an indigenous community who live close to the Iguaçu National Park in Brazil. The area was only recently recovered in part by native locals after a long history of colonisation. The locals farm and raise animals on the land, and create and sell handicrafts to supplement their income.

Day 11 : Foz do Iguaçu - Paraty

Today, you will transfer to Foz do Iguaçu Airport for a flight back to Rio de Janeiro. On arrival, you will be met and transferred by land to the picturesque town of Paraty (transfer takes 4-5 hours). The rest of the day is at leisure.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its charming colonial architecture and 17th century buildings dating back to the Brazilian Gold Rush, Paraty is a small, picturesque town on Brazil's Costa Verde (Green Coast). With its mountainous backdrop, cobbled streets and the beautiful whitewashed Capela de Santa, the town is a world away from the hectic cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, between which it lies. The town is within close proximity to secluded beaches and Atlantic Forest, including the Serra de Bocaina National Park, and each year, it hosts the highly succeesful World Literature Festival. Paraty's unique combination of history, culture and nature makes it a fascinating destination in Brazil.

Day 12 : Paraty: Gold Trail and city tour

Experience Paraty's unique combination of history, culture and nature on this fascinating tour through the forest, on the mountainside behind the town. With your expert local guide, step back in time on the Gold Trail, the paved road built by African slaves in the 18th century to bring gold and precious stones out of the Brazilian interior and onto ships to Portugal. The guide will also trace the development of Paraty through the sugar, gold and coffee economic booms. After walking on the trail through the rainforest, stop at freshwater pools and waterfalls for a refreshing swim. You'll also visit the thrilling Toboggan waterfall, a natural rock waterslide that you can slide down safely. From the falls, it's a short walk to a nearby cachaça distillery where, before tasting the various types of cachaça, you will see first-hand how the Brazilian rum is still made the traditional way.

After a stop for lunch (not included), return to the historic old town of Paraty. Beautiful colonial architecture, street design ahead of its time, exiled Portuguese royalty and the dark past of the slave trade are just some of the ingredients that make up Paraty's rich and colourful history.
