Tajikistan

Rugged, remote, and mountainous - landlocked Tajikistan is the smallest of Central Asia's "Stans".

Intro

With dramatic highlands, imposing glaciers and jagged rocky peaks, its breathtaking scenery attracts adventurous climbers, trekkers and mountaineers from all over, not least for the famous Pamir mountain range. However, its charm extends beyond its natural beauty. Inhabited for over 4,000 years, since Aryan nomads arrived here, the traditions of modern-day Tajikistan have been influenced by a blend of cultures, most obviously from ancient Persia and Soviet Russia. Even today Tajiks speak Persian as their first language, the only state in Central Asia to do so.

Blessed with an abundance of ancient fortresses and beautifully-decorated mausoleums, Tajikistan's unique history is ripe for discovery. Follow the legendary Silk Road from the bustling capital of Dushanbe to the magnificent palace of Hubuk. Glance into neighbouring Afghanistan as you cross stunning mountain passes, marvel at spectacular gorges and relax in mineral-rich hot springs. Venture into the lush Wakhan Valley and take in the rural lifestyle of the Wakhi herdsmen in their picturesque villages.
