Bolivia

Landlocked in the heart of South America, Bolivia is one of the continent's least developed nations, yet it is home to impressive, varied landscapes and a thriving indigenous culture, lending the country an authentic charm sometimes lacking from neighbouring countries.

Intro

Bolivia boasts some of the world's most remarkable, remote and sometimes inhospitable terrains - from dizzying Andean peaks and endless deserts to impenetrable Amazonian rainforests. Add to that the largest and most diverse indigenous population in Latin America, and Bolivia promises a remarkable experience unlike anywhere else on the continent. Pre-Columbian Tiahuanaco, a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides a fascinating look into this region's impressive past and the bustling streets and vibrant markets of the capital, La Paz, offer plenty of colour. The colonial cities of Sucre and Potosi betray a faded grandeur with echoes of the Spanish crown and the authentic highland culture of Lake Titicaca pervades the surrounding indigenous settlements and patchwork fields - all set against a stunning backdrop of Andean peaks.

Archaeological remains of dinosaur tracks and fossils can be found within the deep canyons and stalactite-coated caves of Toro Toro National Park. A little-visited pocket of the Amazon rainforest, where new species are still being discovered today, is also possible to visit. Bolivia's final jewel is the surreal landscape of Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flats in the world, where cactus encrusted mounds rise from the flats and dazzling hexagons of salt extend as far as the eye can see. Bolivia can be complex and a little rough around the edges, but its unique charm and energy make for an unparalleled exploration into the unknown.
