Day 1 : Guba - Xinaliq - Galakhudat

After pick up from your hotel in Baku, we begin the drive to Guba, and after a brief stop, continue on to Xinaliq. When you arrive, enjoy lunch with a local family in their home. Next, hike to the caves around Xinaliq, then on to Galakhudat village for dinner and overnight (8-9 km / 3-4 hours of easy to moderate hiking). Overnight in Galakhudat.

Meal plan: Lunch & dinner

With a population of just under 30,000 people, Guba is the main town of northern Azerbaijan. It serves as a trade centre for people living in the mountains near there and hosts some tourists from Baku on weekends. Its main feature is the post-Soviet-era Bet Knesset Synagogue, a sign that this town is the base of Azerbaijan’s small Jewish population. Famous for carpets and apple orchards, the low-key town of Guba, is perched on a cliff top overlooking the Qudiyalchay River. It was founded in the 18th century as the new capital of local potentate Fatali Khan but rapidly became a quiet provincial backwater once the khanate had been absorbed into the Russian Empire (1806). A number of historic buildings remain from that period and today Guba's wooded hinterland is becoming a popular spot for Baku weekenders, thanks to its distant horizon of snow-topped mountains and a comparatively cool summer climate.

Located roughly 2,350-metres (7,710-feet) above sea-level, high in the Greater Caucasus mountains, there are few destinations further off-the-beaten-track than ancient Xinaliq. The village dates back many centuries to the Caucasian Albanian period, and due to its extreme isolation, many of its ancient customs and traditions are still alive to this day. With its own language, unique way of life, historic handicrafts & practices and age-old beliefs, visiting Xinaliq is like taking a step back in time. With 360-degree views of the surrounding mountain ranges, the village is also a perfect stop for those hiking the scenic landscape that surrounds it.

At an altitude of roughly 2,200-metres, Galakhudat sits within the rugged terrain of the Gizilgaya Plateau. Though the village is relatively close to the main road between Guba and Xinaliq, and therefore serves as an early stop for many of the intrepid travellers who hike this region, it has maintained its history remarkably well. Galakhudat is the only home of Azerbaijani Turks in the area, and as a result, offers visitors a unique cultural experience.

Day 2 : Galakhudat - Griz

After breakfast, begin the morning hike to Griz (12 km / 4.5 hours of moderate hiking). After having lunch, you will have free time to explore the mountain village. In the evening, enjoy dinner and some time spent star gazing before bed. Overnight in Griz.

Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

With the deep canyon of Gudiyalchay on one side and the steep, rocky slopes of Gizilgaya on the other, the village of Griz possesses a rugged beauty unparalleled by any other in the region. The welcoming villagers of Griz belong to the Shadag ethnic group, and as such, possess a unique culture and language. In addition to a lot of snowfall, the village sees many beautifully clear and starry nights, and in the daylight hours, scenic sights around Griz include waterfalls, caves and mountain vistas.

Day 3 : Griz - Laza

After breakfast, depart the village and drive to a viewpoint to enjoy scenic views over Gizilgaya, Bazarduzu and Shahdag. Return to the hiking point and begin the hike to Laza (13 km / 5 hours of moderate hiking), stopping at a shepherd camp along the way for a picnic lunch. Arrive in Laza for dinner. Overnight in Laza.

Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Situated in the Gusarchay River valley, overlooked by the Shadag and Gizilgaya plateaus, Laza is one of the smaller villages in the region, though it should by no means be overlooked. Home to only 30 houses, Laza’s community is small, perhaps making their unique Lezgi culture all the more intriguing. The beauty that surrounds the village is worth the visit alone, and with spectacular views of the Caucasus and a cascading set of waterfalls, it is perfect trekking country.

Day 5 : Yergikek - Qer - Kuzun - Baku

Wake up early and witness the beautiful sunrise. After breakfast, begin the hike to Qer, stopping at the villages of Elik and Archan along the way (7-8 km / 3 hours of descending, easy hiking). When you arrive at Qer, enjoy lunch and a short rest in the village before continuing hiking to Kuzun (8-9 km / 3 hours of descending, easy hiking). Enjoy dinner in Kuzun before driving to Baku where the tour ends.

Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is an ancient city that is located between Asia and Europe on the Absheron peninsula in the Caspian Sea. Its name means 'city of winds' or 'city on the hill' and Baku was first mentioned in the Egyptian Pharaoh Minesan's Book of the Dead in 3500 BC, meaning the city is at least 5,500 years old. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, Baku was an important staging post on the Silk Road and is still a key rail junction and Caspian port. The city is also where the first national theatre in the Muslim world opened, and where the country’s first newspaper and library were established. In the area around Baku there is a large concentration of ancient oil fields (or 'Oil Stones').

Reviews

We had a fantastic time on our Best of the Caucasus tour. We loved eating with the families in Georgia and visiting the Molovan family in Armenia, definitely highlights of the trip. Our Georgian guide in particular was the best you could possibly have, giving a true insight into the country. He should be recommended for an award!

We asked Travel the Unknown to come up with an unusual trip to 6 counties of the Caucasus and the ex-Soviet Union countries. They did so in a tour that flowed seamlessly the whole 38 days. The most impressive part was when Ukrainian Airlines cancelled our connecting flights from Kiev to Minsk, for 2 consecutive days. We contacted Travel The Unknown that morning and asked them to arrange an overnight train with a sleeping compartment. When arrived in Kiev, we were met at the airport, driven to the train station where tickets where waiting for us. They arranged for our pickup at the station in Minsk, as we left the train, and we went on our planned tours without losing a minute. That is what I call great service!

Loved the Caucasus with Travel the Unknown. I learnt of their ancient history and the current geopolitical significance of the cross roads between West and East. Another first class trip from Travel the Unknown with extremely knowledgeable guides and great hotels.

Margaret Small , Best of the Caucasus

The trip to the Caucasus was both illuminating and fun. It was particularly interesting to visit all three countries, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, to try to understand the area and the problems they face from each country's very different perspective. The scenery in the whole area is breathtaking. The tour introduced us to many local people who were all very hospitable and generous. They welcomed us warmly and joined in our enjoyment of "having a go" at various crafts, eg bread making, felt-making, learning a bit of Georgian script, etc. In each of the three countries, religion is fundamental to their lives and visits to mosques, temples, churches, monasteries and cathedrals were a large feature in the tour. I would highly recommend the tour to anyone who likes an activity-packed holiday in places that are off the beaten track.
