Dong Ky

A great place to visit near Hanoi and one that is not on the tourist trail is Dong Ky. It is a place where wooden furniture is made, much of which is shipped to China. Some of it is ornate to the point of ridiculousness and grandiosity and flashy are the order of the day. But some of the carving work is really remarkable and the skill of the craftsmen and women is to be very much admired. The locals are not used to having an audience and are very welcoming; we received plenty of offers of tea, and double-takes at the foreigner wandering the narrow back alleys of Dong Ky were not uncommon.

But always accompanied with a spreading smile as is so often the way in Vietnam. There are also some boutiques on the main streets where you can buy some wood carvings but they are not at all aimed at the tourist market, and some pieces weigh upwards of a tonne! Besides it is the back alleys where the workshops are that are the charm. There are also a couple of charming pagodas near the street where the raw materials are sold, random pieces of wood.
