Overnight in Hotel Presidente, San José

Meal plan: n/a

The capital city of Costa Rica, San José is located in the Central Valley region with the Talamanca Mountains to the south and volcanoes to the north. Day 2 : San José - Irazú Volcano - Orosi Valley - San José

This morning after breakfast, head east out of the city for Irazú Volcano, ascending all the way to the crater. Irazú, the highest volcano in Costa Rica, provides great spots from which you will enjoy spectacular views of its four craters and, on a clear day, see views of both the Pacific and Caribbean plains. A stop at the first museum of vulcanologic studies will complement your trip to Irazú and provide more information on the behaviours and history of these geologic formations.

This tour also includes a visit to the beautiful Orosi Valley where lunch can be taken in a local restaurant, and a short stop in the old capital of Costa Rica, Cartago.

In the afternoon, visit the San Jose National Theater and Gold Museum. Discover the culture and history of Costa Rica’s capital city. Also visit its historic residential areas, such Barrio Amón and the local parks surrounding it, the metropolitan cathedral and the central market.

Overnight in Hotel Presidente, San José

Meal plan: Breakfast

Located in Costa Rica’s Central Volcanic Conservation Area, Irazú Volcano National Park spans 23 km2 around the active Irazú Volcano. At 3,432 metres above sea level it is Costa Rica’s tallest, and at its summit both Caribbean and Pacific coasts can be seen. Referred to by locals as 'El Coloso' (The Colossus), Irazú has remained relatively dormant since 1962. However, its geological features, including two dramatic crater lakes - Principal and Diego de la Haya - illustrate the power and strength Irazú holds.

Nestled in the foothills of the Irazú Volcano is the city of Cartago. Founded in 1563 as the first capital of Costa Rica, it retains little of its colonial architecture due to damage from several earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. However, the remains of the Santiago Apostol Parish and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels still stand, with the latter drawing large numbers of pilgrims during the summer months. It is also home to the Lankester Botanical Gardens and its award-winning collections of orchids and epiphytes.

Covering an area of over 300 km2 on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, Tortuguero National Park is one of the country's principal attractions. The park experiences exceptionally high rainfall and this, combined with the unique environment created by the combination of freshwater and seawater, makes the beaches, canals, lagoons and wetlands of Tortuguero areas of exceptional biodiversity. The protected beaches are home to a great number of nesting turtles, including green sea turtles, leatherbacks and hawksbill, and the forests host several monkey species, sloths, snakes and spiders.

At the Zuñiga farm, learn what elements create the perfect balance to produce the most delicious pineapples and how to pick a good pineapple in your local market when you return home.

Start the tour in a comfortable truck and enjoy an explanation about the planting, morphology, development and harvesting of this sweet golden fruit. Eat freshly-cut pineapple that is picked right in front of you. End the tour with a wonderful cool drink of field-fresh pressed pineapple juice. Meal plan: Breakfast

Arenal Volcano is a relatively young volcano that dominates the fertile landscape of Arenal Volcano National Park. Until 1968, locals had considered Arenal to be a mountain. However, everything changed on the morning of 29th July 1968, when the supposed mountain suddenly erupted. The eruptions continued non-stop for several days, covering more than 15 square kilometres with lava, rocks and ash, affecting three towns and its crops, livestock, and properties. From then until 2010, Arenal Volcano was relatively active, often spewing out rocks, lava, ash and smoke. It is now experiencing an indeterminate resting phase. The region surrounding Arenal offers myriad opportunities for hiking and wildlife spotting. Small changes in altitude create unique micro-climates and ecosystems, making it a suitable home to a variety of exotic species, including howler monkeys, toucans and over 350 bird species.
